Prairie du Chien is a city in Crawford County, Wisconsin. It’s located on the Mississippi River, just above the confluence of the Wisconsin River. The population was 5,506 in 2020.

Prairie du Chien was established in 1673 by French voyageurs. It’s the second-oldest city in Wisconsin, after Green Bay. The city was a gathering place for fur traders and a rendezvous point for early commerce and trade.

The city’s name comes from the French for “Dog’s Meadow”. The French named the location after a group of Fox Indians led by a chief whose name, Alim, meant “chien” in French.
